May is Asian-American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month—a time when we can acknowledge, share, and celebrate Asian-American and Pacific Islander voices and culture.
The month-long celebration, first celebrated in May 1979, is an opportunity to acknowledge the historic achievements of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders and to highlight their historic impact on American history and technology. We also want to recognize the more than 20 million Americans of Asian and Pacific Islander descent who continue a history of innovation and dedication to culture, security, economy, and the future. We stand strong in commitment to our pursuit of AANHPI equality.
Many AAPI/AANHPI individuals and their cultures have been marginalized, making it difficult for some to take pride in their cultures and openly embrace their identities. However, when people see that their communities and allies openly support and celebrate them, it becomes safer and easier for all people and cultures to celebrate that our diversity and differences are the very things that make us all brilliant and unique. This May, in particular, we celebrate, and we strengthen our resolve to stand united against hate.
